Poetry Month 2010 #17

ROSEMARY

The grand dame of the garden
once overlooked the lavenders,
sweet scented and clarifying,
and the roses,
sweeter still and delicate,
and the asparagus with filmy fronds and red berries.
The grand dame
with bright blue blossoms adorning aromatic foliage
has gone ahead,
woody trunk and barren stems
lie in repose among the weeds
that in the winter
hid her passing.

Dear Rosemary gone. We shall have to plant another for no garden should be without. This winter may have done in my artemesia; there is no spring flourish. A trip to the Farmers’ Market is in order.
