Poem a Day #2 April 2011

Tunisia, land of legends
and truth
prosperous
free
salt lakes
sand dunes
yardangs
strong ksars
sheltering people from the fierce sun
holding secrets
through the ages

Yardangs are the beautiful sand pillars and wind sculptures. Ksars are the large communities that are built all jumbled up together. To me, they resemble the Anasazi towns of the Southwest, fortified and strong, a collaborative effort to sustain the people through hard times as well as good.

Tunisia, because it was one of the locations for the Star Wars (Tattoine) films.

And yes, there have been significant changes since January when the people rose up. Whether their freedom is like ours, it appears from the news feeds that they now experience more liberties than they had for quite some time.

Okay, what are yardangs and ksars? Sand formations and tents? Is Tunisia free? Since the uprisings this year? Do tell.
