We all love the pretty strings of colored or white lights, whether strung inside in December or in gardens in the middle of summer. There are two problems, however: they burn out and it can be tough to get the little replacement bulbs in (assuming you have a string that stayed lit so you can find the burnt out one), and they use a surprising amount of electricity.
Computer technology to the rescue!
LED lights are now (actually have been for some time but this year they’re getting the press) available! We haven’t purchased any yet, but my parents did. Conservative bordering on phobic when it comes to new technology, I was surprised they would try them — but they are really pleased with the brightness of the strings and they are indistinguishable from their other light strings.
One caution — my father said the instructions indicated that lead is present in the string he purchased (made in China) and that handwashing was necessary after handling it. You will want to be sure to keep small children away from these unless you have tested them for lead and discovered they are clean.
PGE has a good description and comparison here: http://www.pge.com/res/holiday_lighting.html
Our family will be switching over to LED strings also. And saving money, time and the environment!
