Making decisions

Today, we followed up a tip from my brothers, Matt and Dave, on a place in Centralia that collects, refinishes and sells old bathroom fixtures. My dream tub was there!

A little longer than the one I was going to order online which would have been a reproduction, this one felt PERFECT when I sat in it. I like that we are not using up all the resources to get a reproduction, but re-using something that has a history.

I like that the feet are a little smaller/more delicate than the really fat claw feet, they will fit the space a lot better. The tub itself won’t leave a lot of “wiggle room” in the alcove, but it will be so comfortable…

Here is a pic as it looks right now. I will decide on a color for the outside later, they will finish it and deliver it in February.

The outside shows almost a dozen different colors from paint applications over the years. The inside has a scratch or two that are permanent, but not horrible. There is a small chip in the enamel on the far side that has been painted over, that I have an idea what I want to do to make it less noticeable. The enamel could theoretically be repaired, but the wear and tear don't bother me. The feet will be sandblasted then clear-coated so they are dark iron colored again. The outside of the tub will get sanded down and repainted (not sure what color I want yet...). I will have matte nickel fixtures, no shower attachment, just a lovely swan-neck faucet with lever handles. The stopped will be an old-fashioned plug with a chain. It will be PERFECT!

The website for the company we are going through is Northwest Tub. The owner is Steve Kopa, and the young man who helped us is Seth… If you are in the southern Puget Sound region (or elsewhere, too!). They are worth a try.

The OTHER decision today was on the fireplace. We are “go” for the fireplace. It will be the most bare-bones FireplaceXtraordinaire TRV 21 model, which eventually I will surround with tile or painted plaster (or both?) and a simple wood mantel above. We have already talked to our foreman about the placement and such, so we’ll have space above for the television on the wall above. Advantages to this model include a little additional height, the narrowness seems to fit the corner we are putting it in a little better, it has two settings for the flames so if we just want a little ambiance but not the heat (or the bright flicker) we can turn it down, and it is just about the price we were figuring on including installation cost.

It looks like this (picture taken from and links back to their website). Click on the image to go to the page on their website that displays this style.

And that was our day, long and rainy, but spent with our elder son making some long-delayed decisions. A good feeling!
