Focusing on the future

Some days, like today when the rain pours down sideways and the house is far from ready, I become discouraged. The apartment seems smaller every day that I am away from home. The chores that I have to do get done, but only the ones that are essential for daily living. I feel as if there is little point in over-organizing, over-planning for life here when in the next two months I have to move everything. I have felt that way for nearly 6 months already. I am slowly beginning to pick things up and put them in bags and boxes in the storage unit, but that happens only when I have help fetching and carrying. My art supplies are inaccessible right now, in a corner behind boxes… Tom and Grant are in the same “place.” It’s not comfortable.

In the future, I will have time, space and leisure to return to my own patterns and rhythms. Space to create, to garden, to relax.

And part of that plan is the gorgeous soaking tub. It is the right length, the right width. I am a small person. “Garden tubs” have never worked for me. This one will.

Here is a preview, it’s sitting in the garage with a plastic tarp keeping it safe from painters. But you can see the lovely, cheery yellow…

I am so happy with this choice. It is my little spot of sunshine for long winter days.

The sunny yellow tub, perfect contrast against the white enamel inside. The feet are currently hidden, but I asked the lovely people who refurbished this tub for me to leave them the natural iron color with a sealant. If they feel too dark later I can paint then. For now, they will be a nice transition from the deep red floor in the bathroom. The dark strips on top belong to one of the doors.

Unfortunately, the tub will be a little too short for Grant, but he will have other benefits of moving home — space to spread out, to invite friends over without worrying about being quiet for the neighbors downstairs. He’ll be able to put up a TV and build a workbench for projects.

Tom will have his kitchen, and his lovely big office filled with great gadgets and storage for all the hobbies and books he enjoys.

We’ll have the garden, the trees, the frogs and birds.

We’ll be home.

Eventually.
